I just learned today that my old friend Julius Adams is now part of the Raleigh Music Collective. Julius, who is a superb violist, was just getting interested in conducting during his final year at the University of Illinois (maybe six or seven years ago). The Raleigh Music Collective, which is now partnered with Shaw University, is an El Sistema program that offers tuition-free musical education to string players in the area around Raleigh, North Carolina.
Julius introduced his advanced chamber ensemble to my arrangement of Florence Price's Adoration. I'm so happy that this piece, conducted by Julius, will have a chance to work its expressive magic on the hearts and bow arms of these fortunate El Sistema students.
