Music is a mystery for people who play it, write it, listen to it, and write about it. The only thing I can really do when I try to say something about music is assume.

Violin in the Family: Thoughts from Karen Rile
I came across a fine piece of writing from Karen Rile that I thought I'd share here.
I still remember how upset I was at age five when I was told I was too young to start piano lessons. Well, I got started later, but, precocious child that I was, I thought it a waste of that time waiting. This was a very interesting read. Thank you for the link.
I recall Yehudi Menuhin speaking about the "crystalizing" experience in which he decided (perhaps the violin decided for him?) for his chosen path. I know personally that, in spite of many diversions, music has been my lifelong love affair, sometimes a hobby and sometime a career (now past). It is interesting to query whether our parents decide, our passion decides for us, we decide or circumstances choose, and maybe a combination of all the above. I do know that my parents did not want my pursuit of music, so music pursued me. Thank God. All good thoughts sent your way.
I am active as a composer, a violist, a violinist, a recorder player, and as a teacher. I have been keeping this space in the blogosphere alive with assumptions about music (and assorted other things) since 2005.
