I spent some time this morning listening to (and being riveted by) some of Michel Legrand's arrangements of his film music for harp and orchestra. Legrand truly understands the power of the sequence and how to exploit pedal point to the fullest. He has extraordinary contrapuntal technique, a brilliant sense of orchestration, astounding musical sincerity, and, as you can hear in the clip below, a really lovely voice. (I agree that the scat singing that starts at 3' 23" is a little bit over the top.)
