Is not "patient problem solving" the way in which large musical works are aggregated into a whole? Many small steps, beginning with perhaps only a kernel of an idea, then integrated into a larger chunk, the chunks becoming units in the greater yet.

The "new math" will be attacked by the mainstream curriculum publishers for several reasons, the largest being the frightening reality that Creative Commons freedoms will erode monopolies in publishing. As with the silly and limp attack on Petrucci, it comes to the same thing. The world is changing, and the "creative" now have more opportunities -- to threaten the entrenched status quo with one simple thing -- the freedom to reason independently and freely. Most interesting.
